Doctoral students working hours

An employment as a doctoral student must refer to full-time work. If a doctoral student so requests, the position may be part-time work, but at least 50 per cent of full-time work. (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Section 3a)

Doctoral students with doctoral employment are covered by the local agreement on teaching and working hours etc. for doctoral students. This means that the total annual working hours are:

  • 1700 hours for employees with 35 vacation days, from the year the doctoral student turns 40
  • 1732 hours for employees with 31 vacation days, from the year the doctoral student turns 30
  • 1756 hours for employees with 28 vacation days, through the year the doctoral student turns 29

This does not mean any deviation from what is stated on the University's website that the doctoral student's annual working time is 260 days. 260 days equals five days a week for 52 weeks. However, one must not forget that the doctoral students have the same right as all other employees for vacation, public holidays, bridge days and days with reduced working hours. As for bridge days, doctoral students have a day off if their annual working hours has been able to be shifted to another time.

Doctoral students' annual planning is documented in their individual study plan.

Teaching

If you are teaching as a doctoral student, it is good to have a work task plan. The work task plan is an important tool for knowing how many hours are set aside for different courses.

Doctoral students are allowed to teach and carry out other department duties up to a maximum of 20% of the working time. The teaching must take place within regular working hours. No later than two weeks before the start of the course, the doctoral student should find out how the teaching is arranged.

Time for teaching is the same as for teachers, a teaching hour should normally include 4 clock hours, which includes pre- and post-work. If there is a need for more pre- and/or post-work, it may be relevant to apply a higher conversion number than 4 clock hours for one teaching hour.

Overtime

All work tasks of a doctoral student must be included within the annual working hours, overtime work must not be ordered for doctoral students.

Inconvenient time supplement (Swedish: OB-tillägg)

For a scheduled teaching hour of which is completed at least half after 18.00 o’clock or on Saturday - Sunday, a salary supplement of SEK 160/teaching hour will be paid.

Working elsewhere

If the activities and work tasks allow it, and after the doctoral student has reported to the head of department or equivalent, the doctoral student can work in a place other than the regular workplace.
