Uppsala University's work on equal opportunities and gender mainstreaming

The Government's regulatory letter stipulates that all higher education institutions (HEI) must develop a plan for how the HEI intends to develop the work on gender mainstreaming in order for the business to contribute to achieving the gender equality policy goals. Gender mainstreaming means that gender equality is integrated and becomes part of the regular activities at all levels of the University.

Uppsala University's "Plan for gender mainstreaming"

Gender mainstreaming is carried out in parallel with the University's regular equal opportunities work. As mentioned above, the requirement for gender mainstreaming highlights one of the seven grounds for discrimination under the Discrimination Act - gender - but Uppsala University's goal is to work as far as possible with gender mainstreaming from an intersectional perspective. This means that gender equality is analysed and understood in relation to other grounds of discrimination, such as ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and disability. With an intersectional perspective, gender mainstreaming can be developed so that more levels and groups are included, influenced and reached by the work. Experiences from the University's work on equal opportunities show the advantages of assuming that women and men are not static or homogeneous groups and that everyone does not identify themselves as women or men and has different living conditions depending on, for example ethnicity, age and functionality. In other words, gender equality is always about gender, but (usually) not only about gender.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES OFFICER

An equal opportunities officer must be present at each department/equivalent with more than 20 employees. The officer should have working hours allocated for the assignment.
