FAQ on union appointment

Can my boss say no to me working for a union?
- In principle, the boss cannot say no, because employees have the right to get involved in union work. But we recommend that you and your boss come to an agreement. It would be sad if the union appointment becomes a cause of a conflict between the employee and the employer.

How is the union appointment financed?
- If you have a union appointment, it is paid for by the University centrally. Your department/unit does not pay for this work.

I have employment as a doctoral student, do I get an extension of my employment?
- Yes, a union appointment gives the right to an extension of employment to the same degree as the union appointment is. This means that if a doctoral student has a union appointment of 10 %, it must give an extension corresponding to 10 %.

I have a fixed-term employment as a researcher, do I get an extension of my employment?
- No, a temporary employee is not entitled to an extension.

Union work, at the office or remote?
- Saco-S at Uppsala University is located in the Yellow Villa at Thunbergsvägen 7A. There are often only a few people in the villa. During the pandemic, we all have worked from home, but now we work a few days a week on site. Under normal circumstances, we prefer you to work on site, but it is possible to make an exception if there is a good reason for it. If you are a representative, you do not need to come to the Yellow Villa to work.

Working hours?
- Working hours are flexible in the sense that it depends on which day of the week is best suited for the union trustee. However, we want there to be a regularity, so that we can plan the work in the workplace. We only have a limited number of desks.
